About this event

  • 6 hours

With a programme to interest and engage everyone from Early Years/Primary to Secondary/Post 16, this event brings together maths education professionals for thought provoking keynote speeches and practical workshops. It is FREE to attend for state funded schools, colleges and interested Local Authority advisers.

Keynote

Steve Wren - Co-ordinating Mathematical Success

In this presentation Steve will explore some of the key messages from Ofsted’s recently published subject report ‘Co-ordinating Mathematical Success’. This was Ofsted’s first report into mathematics education in England’s schools for over 10 years and identified many positive developments in mathematics education over that time, but also some challenges that remain. Steve will provide an opportunity to ask questions about the report following the presentation.

Keynote

Dr Debbie Morgan CBE - Ten years of Teaching for Mastery: lessons learnt and still learning

Teaching for Mastery has considerable potential to improve teaching and learning. Where are you on your Mastery journey and what are your next steps? Debbie Morgan will provide insight into how to address issues, including keeping the class together whilst addressing the needs of all pupils. She will also provide tried and proven ideas that release the magic in the teaching.

Choose one from the following Workshops:

Workshop 1

Jo Morgan - Challenge without acceleration

In this workshop, we will:

  • Discuss how to challenge students without rushing through content or accelerating onto future topics.
  • Look at how we can use challenge both to develop a deeper understanding and to build learners’ mathematical skills.
  • Explore some lovely tasks from a range of topics including indices and angles.

Workshop 2

Gareth Metcalfe - Deconstructing Word Questions

In this workshop, we will discuss how to slowly reveal information in questions, using bar models and variation in questioning to draw children's attention to the deep structure of the problem.
